Which Type of Choke Do You Have?
Where the water backs up usually tells you where the blockage is:
- Toilet Bowl Choke: The water rises or drains very slowly after flushing, often because of wet wipes, too much toilet paper or an object dropped into the bowl.
- Floor Trap Choke: Water pools around a bathroom, kitchen or service yard floor trap, often with a bad smell, caused by hair, soap scum, grease or debris.
- Sink Choke: The kitchen sink or bathroom basin holds water, usually from grease and food waste in the kitchen, or hair and soap in the basin.
- Pipe Chokes: When more than one fixture drains slowly or gurgles at the same time, the blockage is likely further along a shared waste pipe rather than in a single trap.
Our Choke Clearing Process
We do not rely on harsh, pipe-damaging chemical drain cleaners. Every choke is cleared mechanically, in four steps:
- Finding the Blockage: Checking which fixtures are affected and how the water behaves, to tell whether the choke is in one trap or deeper in the pipe.
- Mechanical Clearing: Using augers, drain cables or pressure equipment suited to the fixture, and dismantling traps where needed, to remove the blockage without damaging porcelain, tiles or pipes.
- Flow Testing: Running water or flushing repeatedly to confirm everything drains freely, with no gurgling, backflow or leaks at the joints.
- Clean-Up & Prevention Advice: Leaving the area clean and explaining what caused the choke, so you can help stop it coming back.

Choke Clearing FAQs
Are chemical drain cleaners safe to use on a choke?
They are best avoided. Strong acid or caustic cleaners can damage older pipes and seals, rarely shift solid blockages such as wipes or dropped objects, and leave harsh chemicals sitting in the trap. A plunger is a reasonable first try; if that does not work, mechanical clearing is the safer option.
Why are several drains blocked at the same time?
When a toilet, floor trap and sink back up together, or one gurgles while another drains, the blockage is usually in a pipe they share rather than in each fixture. In HDB flats, owners maintain the sanitary branch pipes inside the flat, while the Town Council maintains the main sanitary pipes. In condominiums, common pipes are usually handled by the management. If a choke turns out to be in a common pipe, we will let you know so you can report it to the right party.
Why does my choke keep coming back?
A recurring choke usually means the cause is still there: grease building up inside a kitchen pipe, hair collecting in a floor trap, or a partial blockage that was pushed further down rather than removed. Repeated chokes in the same spot can also point to poor pipe gradient. Clearing the pipe fully and changing a few habits usually solves it.
What should I do while waiting for a plumber?
Stop using the affected fixture and any others that drain into the same pipe, do not keep flushing a toilet whose water level is rising, and avoid pouring in chemicals. Move towels, mats and anything else that could get wet away from the drain.
